En av de bättre UFC-galorna på länge. Några osannolika upsets, snabba ryck och krigarinsatser och inte minst, den mest oväntade knockouten någon kan minnas.
Det blev långt ifrån ett sjöslag av den överhypade fighten mellan Rashad Evans och Quinton Jackson, men förväntningarna blåste liv i en annars ganska entonig fight. En tung träff från ”Sugar” i första ronden och en knapp nedslagning från ”Rampage” i tredje, fick taket att lyfta på MGM Grand. Men fighten handlade mer om taktik och utnyttjande av fördelar, vilket låg i händerna på Evans. Den mindre av de två var även den snabbare, och med låg tyngdpunkt, säkerhetsavstånd och hetsigt fotarbete, fick Jacksom få chanser att visa hur mycket tryck han har i slagen. Evans dansade sig till en seger, och undantaget yrseln han fick känna på i slutminuterna, var det ganska förutsägbart. Poängslag och nedtagningar säkrade domslutet. Goda nyheten för alla fans av den ylande vilden från Memphis, är att Jackson efteråt verkade ovanligt ödmjuk med motivationen intakt.
Överdriven hype, om än snyggt regisserad sådan, syntes även mellan Dan Miller och Michael Bisping. En hotfull staredown med muck och bläng gav en behövlig injektion till tre ronder kickboxning. Brittisk matchbild således, och även om Bisping fortfarande lider svårt av bristen på power i sina slag, kunde han tryggt boxa hem en poängseger.
Kvällen hedrades av en overklig upset bortom vett och förnuft, när Mike Russow återuppstod från de döda, bara för att sänka stålmannen Todd Duffee med kvällens one hit wonder. I drygt två och en halv rond var Russow knappt mer än en ihärdig päronboll vars enda uppgift var att behålla medvetandet. Sedan kom den. En överhandshöger när allt borde varit över, och Duffee säckade livlöst ihop. En sjövild Joe Rogan intygade att det var det sjukaste han sett på
tusen fighter. Som om miraklet inte räckte, fick Russow 65 papp i bonus för bästa KO också.
Nästa upset stod Jason Brilz för, även om han knappt förlorade domslutet mot Antonio Rogerio Nogueira. Den mindre av de brasilianska Nogbröderna ansågs gå en promenadseger till möte, men där Brilz saknade finlir i sin teknik, kompenserade han med en jäkla vilja utan någon respekt för oddsen. Nogueira åkte i backen, fick kämpa sig ur lås och blev hunsad med. Med en rond var, handlade beslutet om den första och jämnaste ronden. Två domare ansåg att mini-
tauren hade gjort mer. MGM Grand, Dana White och diverse andra baksätesförare, höll inte med. En match där förloraren var den större vinnaren.
Fler nykomlingar ville visa den äldre generationen att konkurrensen har hårdnat. 22-årige John Hathaway tog ett jättekliv upp i rankingen med sin helt otippade utklassning av Diego Sanchez. Den råstarke och långe britten fick ”Nightmare” att framstå som minst ett nummer för liten i återkomsten till weltervikt. Än värre för Sanchez var att Hathaway hela tiden låg ett steg före i tanke, blick och initiativ. Borta var det maskinliknande mangeldriv som
förde Sanchez till titelstriden i två olika viktklasser, och kvar var en blek kopia som visste domslutet innan det hade ropats upp. Det hade antagligen mycket att göra med knäet som närapå knockade Sanchez tidigt i matchen, men ropen har redan börjat skalla om dåligt val av viktklass.
Två hårdslående thaiboxare med tveksam defensiv, det kunde bara sluta med krutrök. Först golvade Luis Cane den långsmale fransmannen Cyrille Diabate, men blev ett par minuter senare måltavla för en lång serie ogarderade slag som avgjorde på KO. Någonstans sitter matchmaker Joe Silva och sneglar på att skicka in Diabate mot en viss Gustafsson. UFC gillar matcher som bara kan sluta med att någon sover.
Två tekniskt underhållande men instabila fighters fick käka tunga poängförluster. Dong Hyun Kim buntade ihop Amir Sadollah med hjälp av singel leg och markkontroll, enkelt och effektivt. Dan Lauzon fick antagligen en biljett ut ur UFC efter att Efrain Escuderos solida boxning och brottning styrt i femton minuter.
Debutanten Waylon Lowe har antagligen fortfarande ont efter att Melvin Guillard körde ett knä genom hans mage i första ronden. Blytung KO som förtjänade en bonus.
Aaron Riley fick en decisionseger, och Joe Brammer fick antagligen vinka adjö till oktagonen.
